NEW YORK (AP) - Robert Emmett, the actor and writer who wrote the satirical
1960's television show ``That Was the Week That Was,'' died April 8 after
surgery for acute appendicitis. He was 78.
Born Robert McMenamin in Monterey, Calif., he changed his name to Emmett,
his father's first name, as his own surname for stage. After graduating from
the University of California at Berkeley and serving in the Navy, he pursued
an acting career in New York, where appeared in numerous Broadway and off
Broadway productions.
In 1953, he also began writing for television and, in 1967, the stage. He
wrote segments for dramatic shows and specials from stars like Barbra
Streisand, Julie Andrews and Harry Belafonte. As head writer for ``That Was
the Week That Was,'' he was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding writing in
1964 and 1965.
Last week, in his final performance, he appeared opposite his wife, actress
Kim Hunter, in ``On Golden Pond'' at the New Jersey Repertory Theater in
Long Branch.
