Spanish playwright Buero Vallejo dies
MADRID, April 29 (Reuters) - Playwright Antonio Buero Vallejo, one of
Spain's leading intellectuals whose writing reflected the country's
repressive post-Civil War era, died on Saturday, state radio said.
Buero Vallejo, 83, died of a stroke, the radio said.
His most famous works included ``History of a Stairway'' and ``In the
Burning Darkness,'' a barely disguised critique of the regime of Spanish
dictator Francisco Franco.
A militant leftist during the 1936-39 Civil War, Buero Vallejo was
imprisoned and sentenced to death by the dictatorship. But his sentence was
commuted and he left prison in 1946. His father was executed during the war.
Buero Vallejo won Spain's most prestigious literary award, the Cervantes
Prize, in 1986 among others and was widely considered the father of Spanish
modern theater.
