French novelist Dard dies, creator of San Antonio
PARIS, June 8 (Reuters) - French novelist Frederic Dard, whose truculent
police inspector San Antonio chased criminals and women in more than 140
thrillers, has died aged 78, French media said on Thursday.
They said Dard, who lived in Switzerland, died there of a heart attack on
Tuesday and would be buried later on Thursday in Bourgoin-Jallieu, near
Lyon, where he was born.
San Antonio and his foul-mouthed, Beaujolais-guzzling deputy Berurier
delighted generations of readers and made Dard a millionaire.
French President Jacques Chirac hailed Dard as ``a magician of the French
language...an immensely generous writer.''
``We will miss this long-time companion, this travel friend,'' he said.
Dard began his career as a journalist, but went on to see sales of his
books reach some 200 million copies. Besides the San Antonio series, which
sold like hot cakes in railway station kiosks, he wrote more serious,
psychological novels as well as film scripts.
