Mexican singer ``Cuco'' Sanchez dies

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican folk composer and singer Jose del Refugio
``Cuco'' Sanchez, whose sorrowful laments tapped into the dark side of the
country's soul, died Thursday at the age of 79.

``He died this morning from a lung ailment,'' Karina Manzo, a spokeswoman
for Mexico City's Santa Elena hospital, told Reuters.

Sanchez was a dean of Mexican ranchera music that is akin to U.S. country
music with themes encompassing lost love, drink and rural life.

Among his classic compositions are ``La Cama de Piedra'' (Bed of Stone),
``Que Me Lleve el Diablo'' (Let the Devil Take Me) and ''Arrieros Somos''
(We're Plowmen).
