Former Redskins center dies of cancer
Posted: Sunday December 24, 2000 5:58 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Dan Turk, a former center who played with his brother on
the Washington Redskins during a 15-year NFL career, has died of cancer at
38.
He died Saturday night at his Ashburn, Va., home. His death was announced by
Washington interim head coach Terry Robiskie after Sunday's game against
Arizona.
"We had a moment of silence in the locker room before the game," Robiskie
said.
Turk was half of the first brother-to-brother, long snapper-to-punter
combination in NFL history. He and punter Matt Turk played for the Redskins
from 1997-99. Dan Turk also played for Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the
Raiders.
Turk lettered two years at Drake before transferring to Wisconsin. He was
drafted by the Steelers in 1985.
Turk's last NFL snap was a one-hopper that caused a field-goal attempt to go
awry in the final moments of Washington's 14-13 playoff loss at Tampa Bay in
January. The Redskins chose not to re-sign Turk for this season, and his
brother was traded to Miami.
Three months later, Dan Turk was diagnosed with cancer. At his family's
request, his condition was not made public.
Dan Turk was also his brother's agent, and the Turks operated the "Dog
Depot" hot dog stands in the Redskins Park area.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and a daughter, Sarah.
