Spanish singer Carlos Cano dead at 54
MADRID, Spain - Carlos Cano, the velvet-voiced balladeer, died of heart
failure Tuesday in his hometown of Granada, Spain. He was 54.
Cano was hospitalized November 28 for a ruptured aorta, a problem he'd
suffered five years earlier.
Cano's ballads, or coplas, touched on everything from romance to politics.
"The copla is about passion, and the more you have lived, the better you can
sing it," the singer/songwriter once said.
Spain's best-known judge, Baltasar Garzon, a friend of Cano and fellow
Andalusian, called Onda Cero radio upon learning of Cano's death. "He once
told me life was so big he didn't have enough time to live it all," Garzon
said.
Cano is survived by his companion, Eva Sanchez Martinez, and their son
Pablo. He also has two daughters from a previous marriage.
