PORT LAVACA, Texas (AP) -- A bus chartered by the Grammy-winning Tejano band
Los Palominos ran a stop sign, throwing out a passenger, who was killed when
the bus ran over him, police said.
Drummer Jesse Arreola, 31, was thrown into a ditch, where the bus ran over
him, said Veronica Diaz of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department.
The driver apparently was distracted by a conversation with Arreola when the
accident occurred, Diaz said.
Arreola's brothers and fellow band members, James, Johnny and George
Arreola, the driver and an unidentified passenger suffered only minor
injuries. The driver's name was not released.
Jesse Arreola had recently overcome leukemia, said band producer Armando
Lichtenberger Jr.
"He had an extreme passion for music; music was his everything," he said.
"In public he was very quiet ... behind closed doors, he was pretty much the
life of the party."
The band performed Saturday night in Port Lavaca, and was on its way to a
concert in Kenedy scheduled for Sunday, said Lupita Flores, a spokeswoman
for the band's label.
The brothers began singing in 1984 under the name Los Tremendos, but
switched their name to Los Palominos in 1995.
Last year, Los Palominos won best Tejano performance at the Grammy Awards
and the Latin Grammy Awards for their song, "Por Eso Te Amo." They received
comeback album of the year at the 20th annual Tejano Music Awards.
