NEW ROCHELLE, New York (AP) -- Edward Fitzgerald, an author and former chief
executive of the Book-of-the-Month Club, died February 11 of complications
from a stroke. He was 81.

Fitzgerald helped direct the book club from 1973 to 1984 when membership was
near its peak. During his tenure, the club shifted its focus from
general-interest hardcover books to a wide selection of titles and specialty
clubs.

Fitzgerald, who also founded the Quality Paperback Book Club, co-authored
several autobiographies of sports figures such as Althea Gibson, Yogi Berra,
Mel Allen and Johnny Unitas.

In 1960, Fitzgerald was named president of the Doubleday company's book
division, which included its book club, the Literary Guild. In 1968, he
moved to the McCall's Magazine Group, publisher of McCall's, Redbook and The
Saturday Review.
