R&B Performer Ernie K-Doe Dies in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Ernie K-Doe, the hard-rocking, hard-drinking
rhythm and bluesman who topped the charts with ''Mother-in-Law'' in 1961,
died Thursday morning at University Hospital in New Orleans. He was 65.
Hospital spokesman Jerry Romig said K-Doe was ``very sick'' when admitted
on Friday and lapsed into a coma three days before his death.
K-Doe performed numerous times at the famed Apollo Theater in New York,
the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia, the Howard Theater in Washington,
D.C., and once in Carnegie Hall, according to his Web site.
He found fame in New Orleans' R&B glory days in the 1950s and 1960s along
with the Neville Brothers, Little Richard and Fats Domino.
In 1995, he was inducted into the New Orleans Music Hall of Fame and was
presented the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award in 1997 at Radio
City Music Hall.
In recent years, the performer had ``been on the path to sobriety after
living in an alcoholic haze for years,'' according to the Web site
biography. He operated the Mother-in-Law Lounge where he performed with a
variety of musicians.
