South Carolina Rep. Floyd Spence Dies at 73

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - South Carolina Republican Rep. Floyd Spence (news -
bio - voting record) died on Thursday at a Mississippi hospital, a week
after surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain, his office said. He
was 73.

``Congressman Spence passed away at 5:40 p.m. Central Time with his family
by his side. His body will be taken to South Carolina on Friday,''
Spence's office announced in a statement.

Spence, who had been in critical condition since shortly after the surgery
on Aug. 9, died at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson,
Mississippi.

He was admitted to the hospital on July 24 for treatment of Ramsay Hunt
syndrome, a facial nerve disorder.

Spence, of Lexington, South Carolina, was first elected to Congress in
1971. He served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee from
January 1995 to January 2001 and was also a member of the Veterans'
Affairs committee.

President Bush (news - web sites) expressed condolences and said Spence
would be remembered for his career in public service.

``Laura and I are saddened by the death of Floyd Spence. We will remember
his courage and determination, as well as his support for the men and
women of the armed services and his service to fellow South Carolinians,''
Bush said.
