Dick "Night Train" Lane Remembered In Austin

Dick "Night Train" Lane was remembered Sunday in Austin as a man who
overcame incredible odds to become one of the greatest football players
of all time. Lane was a fighter, a loyal friend and a dedicated father,
according to friends and family who paid their final respects at
Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. He lived an eventful 73 years before
dying of a heart attack Tuesday night. There was a blend of mourners at
the East Austin church: black and white, men and women, young and old.
Some of the 200 in attendance played football with Lane when he was a
two-sport star at old Anderson High. Retired Austin attorney Alex
Porter, who met Lane in school in 1946, says classmates looked up to
Lane. That's according to today's editions of the Austin-American
Statesman. Lane, who spent four years in the Army, is best known for a
football career that began in 1952 with the Los Angeles Rams and ended
in 1965 with the Detroit Lions. He was inducted into th! e ! Pro
Football Hall of Fame in 1974.
