British Actor Michael Elphick Dies

LONDON (Reuters) - British actor Michael Elphick has died in hospital,
the BBC said on Tuesday. 

"Everyone on the cast and crew of Eastenders are shocked to hear of
Michael's tragically early passing," the public broadcaster said in a
statement. 

"He was a talented actor who brought a wealth of experience to the
program and he will be sadly missed." 

Elphick, who was 55, appeared most recently in the BBC soap opera
"Eastenders" as the character Harry Slater, after coming to fame in the
1980s TV comedy drama "Boon." 

Samira Higham, a spokesman for the actor's family, told the Sun
newspaper: "It is very sudden. His family are very upset." 

Elphick died after going into hospital complaining of pains on
Saturday, the paper said. He had collapsed on the pavement two days
previously, it added.
