LONDON (Reuters) - British actress Phyllis Calvert, famed for her roles
in the Gainsborough Studio films of the 1930s and 40s, died on Tuesday
aged 87, the BBC reported.

Calvert, who starred in films such as "Madonna (news - web sites) of
the Seven Moons" and "The Man in Grey," was famous for portraying a
string of elegant and charming women in a career spanning 65 years.

Her first film role was "Discord" in 1932 and her last was "Mrs.
Dalloway" in 1997 but she was best known as one of the "Gainsborough
girls" who helped put Britain's film industry on the map after World
War II.

While other British actresses of her era, such as Vivien Leigh and
Deborah Kerr, successfully pursued Hollywood fame, Calvert preferred to
stay at home, taking on stage work as well as film. The BBC said
Calvert married book dealer Peter Murray-Hill in 1941 and the couple
had two children before his death in 1957. The broadcaster said it was
informed of Calvert's death by her grandson Thomas Dyton.
