[Deathwatch] Roman Tam, Hong Kong Singer, 52

Hong Kong Singer Roman Tam Dies of Liver Cancer

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Veteran Hong Kong singer Roman Tam, who
entertained Chinese audiences the world over for decades with ballads
and flamboyant costumes, died of liver cancer Friday night, his record
company said.

Tam, 52, had been in and out of hospital over the past year after
doctors found a malignant tumor in his liver.

"Roman Tam left us at about 11:15 p.m. (11:15 a.m. EDT)," a spokesman
of Tam's record company, the Emperor Entertainment Group, told Hong
Kong's Cable TV.

His illness left Tam badly emaciated but, a gentleman till the end, he
was never known to have lost patience with the paparazzi even as they
stalked him in and out of hospital.

Tam was one of Hong Kong's most enduring crooners, whose inspirational
Cantonese songs graced the airwaves throughout the 70s and 80s in Hong
Kong.

His best known hits, such as "Under the Lion Rock," can still be heard
on radio in Southeast Asia.
