Abba drummer found dead in Spain

Mon Mar 17

A former drummer for 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA, Ola Brunkert, has
been found dead after an apparent accident in his house in Mallorca,
Spanish police said on Monday.

Brunkert bled to death from a throat wound which police suspect was
caused after he accidentally smashed a pane of glass, a spokeswoman for
the Civil Guard police said, adding that authorities were awaiting the
result of an autopsy.

The official Web site of the band said Brunkert was possibly the only
instrumental musician to appear on all the albums released by the band.

Abba's two male and two female vocalists were among the world's
best-known faces in the 1970s with hits including "Waterloo" and
"Dancing Queen."

Story by: Matt Kiser

Ola Brunkert, studio drummer for seminal Swedish pop band ABBA, was
found dead on Sunday in the garden of his home on the Spanish island of
Mallorca, with cuts to his neck. Police said Monday that Brunkert, 62,
was discovered by a neighbor Sunday afternoon. An autopsy later
revealed the death to be an accident. A spokesperson said Brunkert fell
through a glass door in his dining room and severely cut himself.
Brunkert then wrapped a towel around his neck and sought help, but died
in the garden.

Artists ranging from Belle And Sebastian to Erasure have acknowledged
ABBA's influence and honored the band with covers live and on record.

Brunkert and bass player Rutger Gunnarsson were the only musicians to
appear on all ABBA albums. The group was one of the most successful
commercial pop acts of the 1970s, but last played together in 1982.
