Cancer claims 'Winston Man' Landers
LAUDERHILL, Fla., March 8 (UPI) -- Alan Landers, who earned fame as the
face of Winston cigarettes, has reportedly died of cancer in
Lauderhill, Fla., at the age of 68.
Landers, who earned the moniker "The Winston Man" through his cigarette
advertisements, died last month with the trial for his 1995 lawsuit
against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. still pending, The Miami Herald
reported Sunday.
Since using his rugged good looks to promote cigarette use in the 1960s
and '70s, Landers had become an anti-smoking activist who accused
Reynolds Tobacco about lying about smoking health risks.
Landers, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1987, once said on his
winstonman.com Web site that his activism was meant to protect future
generations.
''I am ... a two-time survivor of lung cancer, as well as open-heart
surgery, emphysema, reconstructed vocal cords and nerve damage,''
Landers, whose trial was to begin next month, he wrote online.
"With this background, I chose to come forward in support of a
tobacco-free world in the interest of protecting the lives of children
and future generations.''
The Herald said Landers, who died Feb. 27, is survived by his brother,
Jack.
