Detroit's WXYZ TV comic legend Soupy Sales dies at 83
October 23
Soupy Sales died today at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York while
under hospice care.
It was on Detroit?s WXYZ-TV where Soupy Sales performed his first TV
show, ?Lunch with Soupy Sales? in the 1950?s.
Sales show played in the Motor City for seven years before he moved to
Los Angeles in 1961 where he became a fill-in host on The Tonight Show.
The comedian moved to New York in 1964 and premiered The Soupy Sales
Show.
He was also known for the hit record, ?Do the Mouse? that sold 250,000
copies in New York alone and sparked a dance craze.
However Sales believed it was his signature move that he would most be
remembered for. By his own estimate, he said he thought he was hit by
pies more than 20,000 times in his career.
Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Shirley MacLaine
also took a pie hit on his show.
The comic was beloved by Detroiters where he got his start in
television and then by the world.
The Detroit Historical Museum featured Sales and others in its recent
"Detroit's Classic TV Personalities" exhibit, which ran through Labor
Day.
