Ulmasova dies at 56
* Svetlana Ulmasova (USSR / Uzbekistan)
It is with sadness that the IAAF received the news today that
Uzbekistans Svetlana Ulmasova (Born 4 Feb 1953) passed away on 6 April
2009.
Running in the colours of the USSR, Svetlana Ulmasova set a World
record for 3000m in Kiev on 25 July 1982, the year in which she
retained her European Championship at the same distance, a title which
she had first won four years earlier in Prague. Her record ((3000m
8:26.78) lasted for two years.
The winner of the World Cup 3000m in Montreal in 1979, Ulmasova took
fourth place in the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki in 1983,
and was many times a national champion at cross country and on the
track.
Ulmasova was also five-times a team medallist - twice gold 80 and 81 -
at the World Cross Country Championships with the USSR team between
1978 and 1987. Her best personal finish was 5th place in 1979.
