Jay Reatard Found Dead in Memphis Home
by Evie Nagy, N.Y. | January 13, 2010 4:28 EST
Memphis garage-punk artist Jimmy Lee Lindsey, better known as Jay
Reatard
<http://www.billboard.com/jsp/tiles/news/artist/jay-reatard/698121>, was
found dead in his Memphis home early Tuesday morning, according to
friends. He was 29.
Goner Records, which has released a number of Reatard's singles and EPs,
posted the following statement
<http://www.goner-records.com/board/index.php> to its website this
afternoon:
"It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend
Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along
information about funeral arrangements when they are made public."
Reatard was known for his energy, prolific output and outlandish stage
behavior. His most recent album, "Watch Me Fall," was released in August
2009 on Matador Records to critical acclaim.
In an interview with Billboard Magazine last summer, Reatard said that
"Watch Me Fall" was about "dealing with mortality issues, growing older,
disenchantment with your youth." He called the album "my first record
where I'm kind of exiting the dumb kid part of my life and going into
the almost 30 point."
In a post on Matador Records' blog
<http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/>, artist liaison and director
of publicity Nils Bernstein wrote:
"We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay
Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and
responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We're
honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."
